Lot Essay

The prototype for this Faun was in the Villa Borghese by 1638, and remained in the collection until 1807, when it was purchased by Napoleon and made its way to Paris. It was on display in the Louvre, its current home, by 1815. The present reduction differs from the original in two respects: it has a naturalistic tree-stump in place of a plinth, and a leafy branch to cover the Faun's genitalia.
