Lot Essay

Giambologna produced two variations on the theme of the pacing bull, the major difference being that this model is less thickset than the other and has a less pronounced dewlap. It has been suggested that the Bull was originally designed as a pendant for Giambologna's Walking Lion, but it was to enjoy great popularity paired with a Horse or on its own. The beast's dignified carriage was inspired by ancient precedent.
