1926 ROYAL ENFIELD MODEL 352 SUPER SPORTS RACING MOTORCYCLE
Registration No. TU 2005
Frame No. 9739
Engine No. 59278
Royal Enfield made motorcycles of various cubic capacities, but it is perhaps the lightweight division of 350cc and below that they are best remembered and achieved their greatest success.
This machine is a special model which Enfields offered to the public as an "over the counter" racing model. It was fitted with an overhead valve racing engine made by J.A. Prestwick of London and commonly known a "JAP" engine. The crankcase is stamped with the prefix "SOR" to the engine number which denotes it as being a Single Overhead Valve Racing engine.
This motorcycle was purchased by Ivor Mutton in 1982 from someone who had owned it since 1932. There is a record showing two owners prior to 1932. The machine was laid up in 1932 and not used for fifty years. It is in very good condition, the engine and gearbox having been rebuilt to their original specifications. The machine has been mentioned in various books, received prizes at Belleview and the Stafford Concours and completed the Banbury Run twice. Some handwritten pages of information concerning its history and mechanics are available as well as the original buff log book and will be included in the sale of this lot.
This is obviously a most important motorcycle and believed to be the only remaining genuine example of a Model 352 with a racing JAP engine.
