From the time of its introduction in March 1961, the E-type Jaguar has been regarded as the epitome of the modern sports touring car. A worthy successor to the XK Jaguar, the E-type evoked the lines and style of the successful D-type, slimmed and refined to create one of the world's most beautiful cars.
With a top-speed approaching 150mph, race bred cornering and handling, exquisite looks, together with comfort and all at an unbelievable price of just ¨2,000, the E-type was the envy of every motorist.
This example represents a fairly straightforward restoration project for the new owner. The current owner purchased the vehicle in 1975 and after some 12 years of occasional use decided to undertake a full restoration. In 1987 the bodywork was restored by a firm in Hampshire at a cost of some ¨3,500. The owner then sent the E-type on to another garage for work on the engine. Sadly the garage went out of business and when it was eventually retrieved it was found to have been left outside and dismantled. The car was then returned to its garage and due to a lack of time and sufficient funds to pay another professional firm to finish the work, the car remained in its unfinished state.
The E-type bodywork is generally very sound but would benefit from being rubbed down and repainted. The engine, we are informed is in running condition, but it is thought will need a good overhaul. The vehicle, we are also informed, is complete and comes with a spare windscreen and a door. The seats are not original Jaguar ones and the whole interior would benefit from a retrim. The steering wheel is a leather bound Moto Lita one and the gearstick fitted resembles an automatic.
