A 13-Bore Breech-Loading Flintlock Carbine

With polygroove rifled turn-off barrel in three stages divided by mouldings and with bulbous muzzle of octagonal section bearing a brass fore-sight (worn flat), the breech inscribed 'London' and engraved with acanthus foliage, foliate engraved grooved tang, signed border engraved rounded lock (cock replaced), moulded figured walnut butt (minor chips and bruising) with raised apron at the barrel tang, engraved brass mounts including solid side-plate in the French manner, the flat of the butt-plate engraved with owner's name 'Grant' on a scroll, and iron fore-end plate (some light surface pitting, mainly on the barrel), London proof marks

Lot Essay

Pierre Gandon, Sr., a Huguenot immigrant gunmaker, was naturalised in 1710 and admitted to the freedom of the Gunmakers' Company by redemption in 1720. He died in about 1743, some seventy years of age
