A 22-Bore Flintlock Sporting Gun
Circa 1685, the lock perhaps by Bertrand Piraube of Paris
With heavy swamped barrel incised with the date '1596' on the sighting flat and with silver fore-sight, the breech section struck with a mark on each side of the central sighting groove, one of them that of Strasburg (similar to Neue Støckel 6049), grooved tang, rounded lock with moulded border and swing-out safety-steel, engraved with a winged demi-figure, a bird, a dragon-fly, and foliated scrollwork, and inscribed 'Pipaube (sic) Aux Galleries A Paris', moulded figured walnut full stock with raised panel at the barrel tang, the cheek-piece and patch-box cover each carved in relief with scrollwork and foliage, iron mounts including pierced scrolled side-plate chiselled with foliage, shaped butt-plate engraved 'No: 41' and with long tang, iron fore-end cap, three baluster ramrod-pipes, and iron-capped ramrod (sling mounts removed)

Lot Essay

The date on the barrel may be correct as it is struck with an early Suhl mark on the underside
The patch-box contains the late owner's handwritten description of the gun, and an old Kranichstein metal tag numbered '331'. This number is repeated in pencil on the inner surface of the patch-box cover
