With brass three-stage turn-off cannon barrels numbered respectively from '1' to '4', border engraved brass actions finely decorated with rococo ornament (some wear) and each signed 'Turvey/London' in a cartouche framed by rocailles on the right side, and fitted with engraved sliding iron cut-off on left (one steel, one cock, and the other top jaw and screw all expertly replaced), engraved trigger-guard safety-catches, figured walnut butts (one with small old repair) profusely inlaid with flowers, shells, foliage and scrollwork in silver wire (minor losses) heightened by small engraved silver panels, silver escutcheons each engraved with owner's crest, and cast and chased silver lion and rampart pommels, Tower private proof marks

Lot Essay

William 2 Turvey was apprenticed to George Turvey in 1742, and free of the Gunmakers' Company in 1750
The crest is probably that of Stapleton of Yorkshire, one of whom was created Baron Despenser in 1788
