With swamped two-stage barrels each with silver fore-sight (one incomplete) and an engraved band at the rear of the breech, engraved tangs, signed flat locks each with moulded border, engraved cock and stepped tail, blued pan, steel-spring, and top jaw and screw, moulded figured walnut full stocks lightly carved in relief with foliage, border engraved gilt-brass mounts including solid side-plates each engraved with a martial trophy, the pommels engraved with a putto seated on a cannon and each engraved with the number '36', blued triggers and trigger-plates, engraved gilt-brass ramrod-pipes, and original ramrods each with engraved gilt-brass cap, and in fine condition throughout

Lot Essay

The maker is probably Friedrich Jakob Bosler (d. 1793), court gunmaker to the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt, and, like other members of his family, a specialist in air rifles (see lots 130 and 131)
