A Rare 32-Bore German Two-Shot Superimposed-Load Wheel-Lock Holster Pistol
Early 17th Century
With octagonal barrel struck at the breech with a mark, an acorn (Neue Støckel 4847) and decorated with shaped panels of already conveted damascened gold arabesques within silver lines, the muzzle with two raised rings, and the rear of the breech with a stepped ramp, gilt tang, flat lock of tandem construction retained by three side-nails and with false-damascened decoration en suite with the barrel, gilt pans, pan-covers, wheel-guides, and safety-catch, walnut full stock (minor repairs) with elongated pommel of octagonal section, inlaid throughout with white staghorn lines enclosing white staghorn scrolls and pellets and pierced and engraved panels decorated with flowers, fruit, foliage, birds, animals, and monsters, and opposite the lock with a putto aiming his rifle at a stag, iron trigger-guard decorated en suite with the barrel, and later horn fore-end cap, ramrod-pipes, and ramrod, the trigger with swivelling additional safety-catch (the decoration on the iron parts and the inlay in the stock probably of later date)
