A LOUIS XVI ENAMEL, SHELL AND GOLD SNUFF-BOX SET WITH A JEWELLED MINIATURE
Paris, 1775, with the charge and discharge marks of Jean-Baptiste Fouache, the export mark and countermark of Henry Clavel, maker's mark indistinct, later struck with a French post-1838 restricted warranty mark for gold, the miniature by Gervase Spencer (c. 1715-1763), signed with initials and dated 1757
Oval box, the cover, sides and base inset with translucent grey enamelled guilloché panels within opaque white and translucent blue enamel borders, the lid applied with an oval enamel miniature of a young gentleman in purple woven velvet coat, white lace cravat and black solitaire, powdered curly hair, within a rose-cut diamond frame, matted gold border with translucent red and translucent green enamelled leaves and berries, the four side panels with oval reserves containing gold plaques chased with playful putti, the base centred with an oval reserve containing a translucent green enamelled swirling foliate rosette centred by a shell roundel, the borders enamelled in translucent green and inset with shimmering shell plaques, the four side dividers also inlaid with shell forming the bases to chased gold herms
