Lot Essay

Oscar, the only son of King Charles XIV Johan (see lots 65 and 181) and Queen Desideria, succeeded his father in 1844. A liberal by temperament, he sought to conciliate nationalist feelings in Norway, encouraged social and economic reforms, developed schools, railways, banks and industry, and pursued a policy of Scandinavian unity and Swedish neutrality. He married Josephine of Leuchtenberg, a granddaughter of Empress Josephine of France.
