A REGENCY SILVER-GILT MUSICAL SNUFF-BOX
by W. Lea & Co. (fl. c. 1814 - c. 1822), marked, with the English duty mark for silver 1798-1821, the Birmingham assay office mark 1756-1821 and the date letter 'u' for 1818-1819
Rectangular box, the polished cover decorated with a rectangular panel of horizontal scalloped engine-turning forming a pattern of small peaked shuttles centred by a rectangular blank reserve, the lid and sides of the base framed by a raised broad band boldly cast with foliage and flowers, horizontally reeded sides, wavy raised thumbpiece, the base engraved with a mandorla-shaped reserve containing a band of pinecones and leaves surrounded by foliage and with key hole upper right, the base of the front side with lever to release the musical disc mechanism playing the famous air of Giovanni Paisiello's opera La Molinara of 1789 'Nel cor più non mi sento'; heart-shaped pierced key
