Lot Essay

Samuel Whitbread (1720-1796) of Southill, Bedfordshire, married Harriet, daughter of William Hayton of Ivinghoe. He came from a non-conformist family in Bedfordshire where he inherited a small property. He entered a London brewery as a clerk and in time became the owner through hard work and good luck. Having amassed a huge fortune, he bought Lord Torrington's Southill estate in 1795 and for a time supported the tory interest in Bedfordshire.
