A most unusual 20th-century French hat-maker's head-measurer,
of top hat form, an engraved mother-of-pearl plaque on the crown for GAUTHIER & DEPRAT FCANTS PARIS, a gilt-printed leather label inside with a crest and Gauthier & Deprat FABRICANTS PARIS, the hat in the form of 48 ebonised wooden bars, spring-loaded around the edge of the rim and with spiked ends to read off a paper template placed beneath the hinged and cork-lined crown, the centre further engraved with the makers' details -- 13in. (33cm.) long; with a baluster-turned and ebonised display stand
