A fine late 18th-century silver Butterfield-pattern compass sundial,
signed on the upper side of the horixontal plate Butterfield AParis, with scales of hours 4-12, 1-8 for latitudes 43°, 46°, 49° and 52°, the folding gnomon with bird-shaped index and graduations 40-60°, the glazed compass with blued-iron needle with brass cap and 16 compass points marked, the underside with the latitudes of 27 continental towns and cities in minutes and degrees (see below), the Premier Cadran engraved on the underside of the compass box, contained in the original octagonal green plush-lined leather-covered case, with silver hinge (two nails missing), catch and two hooks and eyes (some leather loss) -- 3in. (7.6cm.) wide
