A fine late 20th-Century gilt-brass armillary sphere,
signed on the base-plate A. Moretti Roma, the sphere with an unmarked Earth ball and rotating rings engraved with the names of the planets in Italian, with unengraved hour, polar and tropic rings and turned finial, the meridian circle engraved on both sides with degrees in four quadrants and EQUATORE, [CI]RCOLO POLARE ARTICO, TROPICO DEL CAPRICORNO, [CI]RCOLO POLARE ANTARCTICO and TROPICO DEL CANCRO, the horizon ring graduated in days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac with names and pictures for the latter, supported on four elegantly baluster-turned legs, each with finial, on square section columns with an engraved rose on each side, united by a horizontal pierced circular plate with eight wind directions in Italian, at the centre a glazed compass box with engraved wind rose, sixteen compass points and steel needle -- 15¼in. (38.7cm.) high
