A fine 19th-Century German paper and card planisphere
signed erfunden und nach mathematischen Gesetzen verfertiget von Joh:Christ:Böhme 1832, the finely engraved 11 5/8-inch (29.5cm.) square casing for the planisphere for the southern hemisphere pierced to show the rotating volvelle with constellations depicted by mythical beasts and figures and scientific instruments, and the stars to five orders of magnitude, the surround on the casing graduated in degreesa and with compass directions, with a second pierced section with index to read degrees, days of the month and hours off the edge of the volvelle, turned by means of a blue paper-covered star-shaped handle on the reverse, contained in the original folding card slip-case, the interior of the cover with an applied label reading Astronomische Sternscheibe beweglichen Horizonte und Höhenquadrenten als das beste Hülfsmittel zum Selbstunterricht um sich an dem gestirnten Himmel leicht zu orientiren von Johann Christian Böhme Kupfersteche in Leipzig with instructions for use
