Lot Essay

This work is one in an edition of seven.

Harry Jackson writes of this work: "Plantin' came about in late 1959. The Range Burial bronze had an operatic staginess. The setting is like a formal platform with actors arranged on its various sandstone levels. I wanted to simplify and make it much more spartan, emphasizing action turned to thought, the activity of inner reflection by the men around the grave. This came closer to the spirit that would emerge later in the painting [Range Burial, 1960-1963]." (Larry Pointer and Donald Goddard, Harry Jackson, New York, 1981, p. 178)
