In the tradition of Eugéne Boudin and the Impressionists, Hambourg often painted scenes of La Plage travelling to Deauville and Trouville to capture the idle days of families at the seaside. In the present work, the artist shows the fisherman of Langrune S'mer returning from a day at sea. The canvas is divided in half with the sky and the sea equally balanced. Juxtaposed against the tranquill setting are the boldly rendered figures that unify the composition and establish a painterly rhythm throughout the canvas.
