Lot Essay

This chair is related to a set which belonged to General Samuel Blachley Webb, of New York and Connecticut. One chair from the set marked "II," located at Winterthur, is illustrated in Downs, American Furniture: Queen Anne and Chippendale Periods, (New York, 1952) fig. 150. Another, presumably from the set marked "VII," has crewelwork reputedly made by Elizabeth Bancker before her marriage to General Webb. Located in the Museum of the City of New York, this chair was exhibited and is illustrated in Miller, Furniture by New York Cabinetmakers 1650 to 1860 New York, Museum of the City of New York, p. 31, no. 41.
