A Haarlem maiolica dish
1640-1660, attributed to Willem Janszoon Verstraeten
Inspired by the Raphaelesque decoration of Italian maiolica, mainly from the workshop of Orazio Fontana (1510-1571) Urbino, painted in strong ochre, brown and yellow with a central plump cupid holding a cross, surrounded by a band of intricate grotesques, the border en suite with birds and spindly creatures, the edge obliquely hatched

Christie's charges a Buyer's premium calculated at 20.825% of the hammer price for each lot with a value up to €90,000 (NLG 198.334). If the hammer price of a lot exceeds €90,000 then the hammer price of a lot is calculated at 20.825% of the first €90,000 plus 11.9% of any amount in excess of €90,000. In the 1759 inventory of the Stadholder's Cabinet of Antiques "3 dishes painted by Raaphael... (sic)" are listed under No.64. Perhaps they were these Haarlem grotesque dishes. The fact that a strikingly large number of these Haarlem dishes are found in England, could indicate that this ware was already being exported over the North Sea at an early date.
