A Raeren or Westerwald stoneware dated armorial pewter-mounted jug
Circa 1616
(Flachkanne) the flattened globular grey body dashed in blue, moulded in relief with a frontal wreathed medallion enclosing a coat of arms with a crowned prancing lion, probably the Dutch lion, flanked by lion supporters and surrounded by mantling, inscribed 1616, the reverse with a medallion en suite, surrounded by bands of trailing foliage, the shoulders with a vertical band of grotesque mascaroons, the upright neck moulded with a lionesque mask, the slightly domed pewter cover connected with a shell thumbpiece to the loop handle ending in a curled tail, the pedestal foot stepped
