A Rouen faïence octagonal documentary naval battle charger
Second quarter 18th century
(Jatte à bord uni) the white ground painted in blue and enhanced in iron-red with a naval battle scene, depicting two crashing tall ships with flying pennants, one adorned with the French Burgundian lily, further with a multitude of smaller galleons and sloops, the border with a continuous band of oblique acanthus leaves (repaired)

Lot Essay

This dish represents the battle of Messina in 1676, between the French admiral Duguesne and the Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter.
De Ruyter was sent by the Dutch Republic in 1674 with a weak squadron to the Mediterranean Sea to support the Spanish. The great Dutch hero died during this battle near Messina.
