The crinoline hoop-skirt was the fashion on stage in the middle of the 18th century. The Marquise de Pompadour is represented as Galatea in the Opera Acis and Galatea by Lully, produced at Versailles in 1749. She was an enthusiastic and gifted actress and singer. At her wish, two small theatres were built at Versailles for amateur performances.
