Circa 1750, the decoration possibly later, marked with underglaze blue crossed swords
After a model by Johann Joachim Kaendler (1750), gilt and painted in colours, modelled as the young Pluto with dark hair, flanking a treetrunk, wearing a pink-lined green drapery, carrying the elegant Proserpine on his left shoulder, she looking up in despair and pointing her arm towards above, wearing a white drapery enhanced with Indianische Blumen, on oval rocaille base applied with flowers (minute chips to one hand and foot)

Lot Essay

Proserpine, the daughter of the corn-goddess Ceres, was picking flowers in a meadow when she was observed by Pluto, the king of the underworld. Suddenly inflamed with love, Pluto swept her away and Prosperpine was carried down to his kingdom below.
