Lot Essay

In the late Victorian era, there developed passion in England for cultivating orchid plants. These prints were created to illustrate the best forms of these singular and captivating aristocratic plants," and to give information on "the most successful methods of growing them." The "chief aim" was to provide "authentic information as to the nomenclature of the plants, and to disseminate correct instructions in regard to their cultural requirements."

These prints were lithographed by John Nugent Fitch, of the renowned Fitch family of botanical illustrators.
