Each with out-scrolled back and seat covered in brown button-tufted leather and flanked by down-scrolled arms on curule supports flanked by stylized foliate sprays and terminating in caps and castors (2)

Lot Essay

These chairs are based on a design published by John Loudon for 'easy reclining chairs for a library, parlour, or other sitting-room'. Loudon illustrated two chair designs, which he described as 'covered with morocco leather, with button tufts', in his Encyclopedia of Cottage, Farm, and Villa Architecture and Furniture, London, 1839, p. 1057, fig. 1911.

A single period example of this model was sold, Christie's New York, 24 January 2001, lot 322 ($15,000).
