A LATE VICTORIAN GILT-COMPOSITION MIRROR
Circa 1890
Of George III style, the oval inner reserve with beaded inner slip and convex berried leaf outer surround, the mirrored outer slip overlaid with interlocking leafy garlands and with a ribbon-tied beaded surround, surmounted by a garland-hung urn upon an upspringing acanthus clasp issuing further scrolling rinceaux, the sides hung with bellflower garlands above a scrolling acanthus and rinceaux suspended clasp

Lot Essay

A pattern for a related mirror, enriched with Roman acanthus in the 'Robert Adam' manner, was illustrated in C. and R. Light, Cabinet Furniture: Designs and Catalogue of Cabinet and Upholstery Furniture, 1881. A single mirror of this pattern was sold Stokesay Castle, Sotheby's house sale, 28 September 1994, lot 138 (£12,650). Another was sold, Christie's London, 24 September 1998, lot 97 (£3,450). A further example was sold, the property of a Lady, Christie's London, 15 June 2000, lot 211 (£3,800).
