This pair of vases was designed for and exhibited at the 1878 Exhibition Universal, Paris.

Cf. Joan Jones, Minton, The First Two Hundred Years Of Design & Production, Shrewsbury, 1993, pp. 108, 227-229, 317-318 for an extensive discussion of the design sources and payment records for the original works. Although the design record for these vases is quite complete, at the time of Minton's Bicentenary, the existence of these vases was unknown.

John Moyr Smith was an architect and designer working for Mintons circa 1872-1889. Dr. Christopher Dresser was a botanist and designer who collaborated with the studios at Mintons from about 1865.
