Lot Essay

Henry Stacy Marks was employed at the Minton Art Studio from about 1871. He was a member of the Royal Academy and specialized in plaque and tile designs. Students disseminated his works to other Staffordshire factories from the Kensington Gore Art Pottery Studio.

See Elizabeth Aslin and Paul Atterbury ed., Minton 1798-1910, Exhibition Catalogue, London 1976, p. 68-69 for examples painted by an unidentified artist at Mintons in 1874. The designs are preserved in the Minton archive. See also Art and Industry sale, Sotheby's, London, 8 November 1999, lot 90, for a Minton Art Studio set sold to Benefit the Royal Crown Derby and Minton Museums.
