A rare set of American bronze and steel fire-tools
Edward F. Caldwell & Co. (Lots 263-269) Throughout the first quarter of the 20th century, the New York firm established by Edward F. Caldwell in 1895 was perhaps the leading American designer and manufacturer initially of lighting fixtures, and from 1910, other decorative objects fashioned in metal and various other materials. After Caldwell's death in 1914, his business partner Victor E. von Lossberg continued the company. Working from their foundry at 38 West Fifteenth Street, the company supplied fine quality products to a rich and conservative clientèle, including such illustrious names as Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick, J. Pierpoint Morgan and Frederick W. Vanderbilt. Caldwell is also known for providing much of the lighting fixtures for the White House in Washington D.C. The firm was incorporated in 1915 and the addition of the 'Inc.' at this time aids in dating pieces.
