The depiction of 'The Wolf as Shepherd' is after the original engraving from Jean de la Fontaine, Fables Choisies mises en vers, Desaint/Saillant/Durand, 1755 to 1759. This particular edition of La Fontaine's fables has been noted as one of the great monuments of the French illustrated book.
