Inset with a fleur de pèche marble top, the frieze fitted with a long drawer, centred on each side with a projecting tablet inlaid with putti emblematic of the Arts and Science, flanked by panels of foliate Vitruvian scrolling, the angles with outscrolled acanthus, on ormolu-banded tapering straight legs and laurel-sheathed sabots

Lot Essay

The present model is based on a writing table supplied in 1771 by Jean-Henri Riesener (maître 1768; d. 1806) for Marie-Antoinette at the Petit Trianon in Versailles. The table was reproduced in the 19th and early 20th centuries by such celebrated ébénistes as Alfred Beurdeley and François Linke.
