This lantern is based on a design by Thomas Chippendale (see The Gentleman and Cabinet Makers Director, 3rd Edition, 1762, pl. CLIII). A pair of lanterns of this design were sold Sotheby's, The Leverhulme Collection, 26-28 June 2001, lot 14 (£55,700).
