FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN. All early editions of this ascetic work are anonymous, and it has been falsely attributed to Dionysius Carthusiensis due to its own claim of having been edited by a Carthusian. The Carthusian is, however, Jacobus de Gruytrode, prior of the Charterhouse of the Twelve Apostles near Liège, and the Speculum animae peccatricis is the fourth chapter of his Specula omnis status vitae humanae. When Neufforge wrote about this copy in his Über den Versuch einer deutschen Bibliothek als Spiegel deutscher Kulturentwicklung (p.189), he believed it to be unique in containing quire b; BMC had constructed an elaborate situation in which quire b, missing in that copy, had been spoiled, and Dinckmut had tried to make the missing text less obvious by leading the type on the last page of quire a to cover the transition into chapter 2. In fact, although quire b is missing in several copies, it is present not only in the Klotz copy but also in those described in Pellechet-Polain and BSB, showing that the leading of type has nothing to do with the presence or absence of quire b. HC 14949; BMC II, 534 (IA. 9340); Pellechet-Polain 10664; IDL 2535; CIBN J-340; BSB I-27
