The "Golden Legend" was an exceedingly popular text in the 15th century and a chief source for stories of the saints' lives and the celebration of Christian festivals. This copy is a witness to the cult of the Virgin Mary, as a contemporary note at Assumption Day in both register and text highlights. A number of sheets of this edition were reset, as demonstrated by bifolia 1/1.10, 5.6 and 2/2.9, 3.8, and 5.6 in the Klotz copy. The two printings of these sheets must have occurred within quick succession, since the watermarks agree with others in both the Klotz and the British Library copies. BSB dates this edition to "about 1478" on the basis of paper investigations by Ziesche and Schnitger. C 6388; BMC I, 84 (IB. 1028); Goff J-88; Polain(B) 2183; IDL 2556; BSB I-72
