Chancery 2° (291x197mm). Collation: a6 b-e4 f-g6 h4 i6 k2 l4 m6 n8 o-p6 q4 r-v6 x4 y-z6 A-Z6 AA-KK6 *2 2a-2b6. (a1r title, a1v prologue, a2v full-page woodcut, a3r text, KK5v colophon, KK6 blank, *1-2 map of Germany, 2a1 title to register, 2a2 register, 2b6 blank). 327 (of 332, without blanks KK6 and 2b6 and lacking title (supplied in facsimile) and 2b1,5) leaves, fo.191 supplied from another copy with one section in facsimile, bifolium a3-4 misbound in quire c. 51-52 lines and headline, double column. Type: 4:150G (headlines and headings), 9:87G (text), woodcut black lombard capitals, one Maiblumen capital, profusely illustrated with one full-page woodcut, woodcut city views, portraits, and scenes, 2 xylographic title-pages, plus a 2-page map of Germany. (Quire a rehinged, tears in several leaves usually repaired but occasionally with loss, some light staining and soiling, map of Germany frayed at edges (repaired) with slight loss and mounted on stub at end, quire k mounted on stub, some worm-tracking in gutter, some plates trimmed at fore-edge.) Sixteenth-century pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, blindstamped with rolls, evidence of two fore-edge clasps, corner and central pieces missing. Provenance: Constantin J. Karadja, with his ex libris stamp (see his article in Gutenberg-Jahrbuch 1934).
This is the second of Schönsperger's German editions of the Nuremberg Chronicle, which he pirated first in 1496 and in Latin in 1497. The map of Germany is new to this edition, although it appears to have been issued simultaneously with captions in Latin for inclusion in the earlier Latin edition.
