BONFINIUS, Antonius (1427-1502). Des Aller Mechtigsten Künigreichs inn Vngern Chronick. Translated from Latin by H.Boner. Bern: M.Apiarius for Ruprecht Winther, Basel 1545.
2° (300 x 195mm). Collation: *, A-Z, a-z, Aa-Ss6, Tt8 (*6 blank). Woodcut illustrations, tailpieces and printer's device at end. (Some browning, marginal in the main, some marginal worming.) Contemporary German blind-stamped pigskin over bevelled wooden boards (lightly soiled and rubbed, clasps lacking). Provenance: Erased inscription of J. Gryphius? Basle 1560; Johann Folitus (17th century).
FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN. Bonfinius was born at Ascoli in December 1427. He later occupied the chair of Greek and Latin literature at Recanati, and after a summons to the Hungarian royal court was appointed governor and tutor to queen Beatrix of Aragon. Hieronymous Boner translated the work of a number of authors, including Ovid, Thucydides, Plutarch, Xenophon. The artist of the woodcuts is unidentified. BL STC German p.141.
