2° (545 x 315mm). Hand-coloured engraved title, 4pp letterpress geographical description incorporating small engraved index of maps, 19 hand-coloured maps, all double-page. Contemporary wallet-style limp travelling calf, upper cover with original blindstamp 'Matt: Seutters. Atlas 20 chart Augspurg' (edges slightly rubbed).

A fine early edition of Seutter's first atlas; the first edition (with 16 maps) was published in 1720. The 20 maps described on the cover of the binding include the engraved title as per the listing in the engraved index. The maps include, the World, Europe, Asia, Africa and America, maps of all the countries of Europe, and a map of the Holy Land. Seutter was apprenticed to J. B. Homann in 1687 in Nuremberg, then worked as an engraver for the publisher J. Wolff in Augsburg, before setting up his own map and globe business in the same city.
