FERRIOL, Charles de (1652-1722). 2 volumes in 1, 4° (193 x 144mm). Titles in red and black, 122 engraved plates, mainly of Turkish costume, including 5 folding (mainly of religious events, one of Dervish music). (Lacking engraved title to vol. I and 6 of the 7 preliminary leaves to vol. II, occasional spotting or light soiling, plate 64 of vol I. with neatly repaired tear, plate 41 of vol. II with clean tear, and folding plate of music with short tear at fold.) 18th-century vellum, lettered on spine (slightly soiled, hinges cracked but firm). Provenance: Count of Lepell (armorial bookplate).
First edition in German of this survey of costumes at the Turkish court, and in other parts of the Turkish Empire. Ferriol was French ambassador to the Porte between 1699 and 1709, and originally commissioned a series of drawings depicting court costumes from the Flemish artist J. B. van Mour, who had lived and worked at Constantinople for many years. These were published in a folio edition in Paris in 1714. The present edition contains plates relating to Greece which do not appear in the Paris edition. The engraved title required by Colas does not appear in the BL, Austrian National Library or Blackmer copies. Lipperheide Lb28 (with coloured plates, and requiring an extra preliminary leaf to vol.
