2 volumes in 1, 2° (330 x 210mm). Half-title (two small tears to lower margin), titles printed in red and black, engraved frontispiece by B. Picart, dedication with engraved headpiece, engraved portrait of the author by G. Valck after G. Kneller, 3 double-page engraved maps, 111 engraved plates, (59 double-page and 13 folding), showing 271 subjects including views, antiquities, flora and fauna, and several fine panoramas, (subjects numbered 1-262, lacking nos. 12 and 74, but with 11 unnumbered images inserted between plates 37 and 38), and 44 engraved illlustrations in the text. (Several short tears, mainly to margins or folds of plates, some neatly repaired or with margins strengthened, a few plates just shaved, generally not affecting image.) Contemporary mottled sheep, spine gilt in six compartments with raised bands and red morocco lettering-piece (joints cracked).
First edition in French of Bruyn's copiously illustrated Voyages. Bruyn, encouraged by the success of his Voyage au Levant (first published in Delft in 1698) began his journey to Moscow and Persia in 1701, returning to Holland in 1708. He was one of the first to describe the Samoyeds and their country. Brunet III, 911 (requires 262 plates); Lipperheide Kaa 6 (requires 128 plates and 45 engraved illustrations). Due to the complexity of collation, sold not subject to return.
