6 volumes (only, of 9) in 3, 2° (380 x 240mm.) Titles with engraved vignettes, 3 printed in red and black, 2 engraved frontispieces (only, of 4), hand-coloured engraved folding map of Carolina, Florida and the Bahamas, (with two tears neatly repaired), 321 hand-coloured engraved plates of birds, flowers and animals by Seligmann and Leitner after Mark Catesby and George Edwards, and engraved portrait of a Samoyed in vol. IV. (Lacking volumes VII-IX and engraved frontispieces to vols. III and IV, title to vol. V with two nealy repaired erasure holes, plates CX-CXIV of vol. IV shaved at lower margin, just trimming some captions, plates LXV and LXVI of vol. II with light stains to inner margin, a few plates with short, clean marginal tears, some neatly repaired, occasional light browning and soiling, mainly in vols. I-IV.) Near-uniform contemporary sheep, spines gilt in compartments (first two volumes with neat repairs to corners and one joint, lightly scuffed).

FIRST EDITION of Georg Leonhard Huth's translation of Edwards's A Natural History of Birds (1743-51) and Gleanings of Natural History (1758-64), and Catesby's The Natural History of Carolina (1754). Seligmann's plates are copies of those in the original works, sometimes incorporating flora and landscapes not included in the originals. Nissen IVB 857; Anker 462. (3)
