CLEMENS, SAMUEL LANGHORNE. Autograph letter signed ("Mark Twain") to Hon. E.J. Hill (postmaster), New York, 7 June 1908. 2 pages, 8vo, on two separate leaves, faint oval Rural Free Delivery postal stamp dated 10 June on first page, fold creases, second page a little soiled; framed with reproduction of famous photograph of Twain sitting on a yacht, 13 x 22 1/2 in. (33 x 56.5 cm.) overall.Clemens requests Rural Free Delivery postal service for his new home in Redding, Conn.: "...The RR Co. [railroad] has done its part to my entire satisfaction, in the matter of granting us express-service after June 15, & now I turn to you & beg you to help me out of the embarrassment of being outside the limit allowed to the rural free delivery that starts from the Redding post office. There are several of us newcomers in a cluster & there will be some more..." Judging from the postal stamp noted above, Clemens's request was granted.
