HARDY, THOMAS. Autograph manuscript of the poem "Waiting Both," n.p., n.d. 1 page, 8vo, a fair copy in dark brown ink, about 50 words, two five-line stanzas. The poem reads: "A star looks down at me, And says: 'Here I & you Stand, each in our degree: What do you mean to do. -- Mean to do?' / I say: 'For all I know, Wait & let Time go by, Till my change come.' -- 'Just so,' The star says: 'So mean I. -- So mean I.'" The poem first appeared in the London Mercury, November 1924; it was collected in Human Shows (1925). With an ALS from Mrs. Florence Hardy to Paul Lemperly, Max Gate, Dorchester, 31 July 1927, 5 pages, 8vo, with envelope, mentioning that she is sending this manuscript; with a brief ANS enclosing the manuscript. "There was a separate MS. of the poem in the possession of Paul Lemperly, a fair copy...designed for a projected postcard reproduction (apparently never made). It was a gift of Mrs. Hardy in August 1927. A facsimile of this MS. appears in Shun Katayama, Thomas Hardy (Tokyo, 1934), p. 129" (Purdy, p. 234).
