Lot Essay

Barye originally designed the present model for the Ministry of the Interior in 1849 and exhibited the group in plaster at the salon of 1850. A fifty-inch example, also cast by the Barbedienne Foundry, surmounted the Barye Memorial, erected in 1894 on the Ile de la Cité, indicating the importance of this work in the artist's oeuvre.
