King Oscar (1799-1859), son of Napoleon's marshal Bernadotte and the second in the new dynasty to reign, ascended to the throne in the 1840's. He married Princess Josephina of Leuchtenberg (1808-1876), and the present busts probably date from the preiod of their coronation.
Byström (1783-1848) spent most of his career in Rome, though he visited Sweden frequently, where he was Professor at the Academy. He owned a marble quarry in Carrara, Italy and had a large and prolific workshop. He was a Romantic follower of the Neo-classical sculptor Canova and a sensitive portraitist.
