Lot Essay

An intimate friend of Marie-Antoinette, the Princesse de Lamballe was a prominent figure at Court during the years immediately prior to the Revolution. Moving to the Tuileries to be closer to Marie-Antoinette, she was imprisoned and guillotined in 1792. The present bust was probably produced as a result of revived interest in the Court of Marie-Antoinette during the Second Empire.
