SYNGE, JOHN MILLINGTON. Autograph letter signed ("J.M. Synge") to Thomas B. Rudmose Brown (lecturer in French at the University of Leeds), Glenageary, Kingston, Ireland, 13 May 1907. 2 pages, 4to, both sides of one sheet, creased from folding, with the original envelope addressed by Synge. Referring to The Playboy of the Western World: "...I suppose you have heard about our Row here over my last play? [Riots had broken out in the audience during the first performance of Playboy in January at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.] The company are on tour again now. They open tonight in Glasgow, then they go to Cambridge, Birmingham, Oxford, and London. I hope to join them in London to see how the Playboy gets on there...I have just brought out my book on the Aran Islands (published end of April). It is nearly time as I wrote the first part of it in 1898, and the whole thing was finished five years ago..." Elsewhere in the letter Synge comments on the French poet-dramatist Paul Claudel. Published in Letters, ed. A. Saddlemyer, vol. 1, pp. 342-43.
