[LEE, ROBERT E., General, C.S.A.]. LEE, GEORGE WASHINGTON CUSTIS, Eldest son of Robert E. Lee, Major General, C.S.A. Autograph note signed ("G.W.C. Lee"), n.p. [Lexington, Va.?], n.d. [1865-1870]. 1 page, 4to, integral blank, slightly dustsoiled. LEE COLLECTS EVIDENCE FOR HIS TRIAL FOR TREASON. The document was once used as a folder to hold documents gathered by R.E. Lee for a possible defence against charges of treason. His eldest son has boldly labelled the upper cover: "Records collected by my father General R.E. Lee for the trial on the treason indictment which was fortunately dismissed. G.W.C. Lee." Jefferson Davis, Lee and others were indicted by a grand jury for treason in 1865, and Lee immediately wrote in protest to President Johnson and U.S. Grant (see R.E. Lee: Letters and Recollections, pp. 164-5, 174-175). Reverdy Johnson offered to defend Lee, but in the end it was agreed that the parole granted to Confederate soldiers at Appomattox applied to Lee as well, and the charges were dropped.
