LINCOLN, ABRAHAM, President. Engraved document signed ("Abraham Lincoln") as President, countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, Washington, D.C., 1 July 1864. 1 page, folio, signature a bit pale, slightly yellowed framed.PRINTED ON PARCHMENT, green paper seal of the United States at top left, elaborately engraved with bold heading at top "President of the United States of America," beneath which an American eagle and the "E Pluribus Unum" motto fly above billowing clouds, a large vignette of crossed flags, cannon and other military paraphernalia at the bottom, with small legend "Engraved by J.V.N. and C.H. Throop, Washington City," accomplished in manuscript. AN AIDE-DE-CAMP APPOINTMENT FOR A DISTINGUISHED OFFICER. President Lincoln and Secretary Stanton appoint Richard F. Halstead Aide-de-Camp with the rank of Captain.
Halstead became Major of the 40th New York Infantry in 1861, and in October 1864 was brevetted Major for meritorious service in the Richmond and Shenandoah Valley campaigns; he was brevetted Lt. Col. on 9 April 1865 for "gallant and meritorious service in campaigns terminating with the surrrender of the insurgent Army under General Robert E. Lee."
